The Jat quota agitation has brought the entire state of Haryana to its knees. Violence, rape and damage to property have been reported from various parts of
the state.
RULE WITH JAT AGITATION |
The damage caused has been estimated to have run into hundreds of
billions of rupees in northern India itself, not including the losses incurred
by the Indian Railways. Here's all you need to know about the Jatagitation and
why it's got the country to a boil.
What The Jats Want
DEMAND OF JATS |
The Jats from 29
percent of Haryana's population. They are considered to be rather powerful,
both politically and financially. Naturally, it remains debatable if they
should be granted a backward status. The Jats demand that they be granted the
OBC (Other Backward Class) status and have held the entire state of Haryana and
parts of northern India on ransom until their demands are met.
The Brief History
JUT ANDOLON |
This is not the first
time that the Jats has protested against their exclusion from the OBC list, but
this certainly happens to be the most violent one. The first such instance of
opposition was reported in 1991, when the Mandal Commission Report came into
implementation and protests had been witnessed upon the exclusion of Jats from
the OBC list.
The National Commission
for Backward Classes had rejected their demands in 1997 while in 2015, the
Supreme Court rejected the Union Government's recommendation in favor of Jats.
The Current Situation
CURRENT SITUATION OF JUT ANDOLON |
The Jats has refused to
accept the Special Backward Class status offered to them by the HaryanaGovernment . The Supreme Court on the other hand, has made it clear that
reservation cannot be provided to a community based on the grounds of caste
alone. Various former ministers and secretaries have been charged with sedition
on grounds of inciting violence and provocations. Reports of crime and other
malicious activities have seen a surge and the non-Jat community of Haryana has
been living in constant fear, some of them too afraid to even mention their
last names. Even though, instances of Jats serving food to people stuck during
the protests and obstruction have been reported, it has been overshadowed by
reports of burglary, rapes, violence, murder, loot, etc. That have swept the
entire state. The criminals have had a free run in the state hiding behind the
state of chaos and violence that prevalent in parts of northern India. It can
only be hoped that an agreement be reached as soon as possible so that the
deadlock is broken and normally be restored.
